Epic Games is trying to change Creator behavior to focus more on great content and less on gaming the Discover Leaderboard.
Epic Games just announced the BIGGIEST CHANGES to Fortnite Discover in a while - and the first piece ships tomorrow.
▶ FOUR THINGS EVERY UEFN CREATOR NEEDS TO KNOW
- 01
- Epic's about to start telling you why you're invisible.
- 02
- "Ranked # 4 in Strategy" is officially meaningless.
- 03
- The Updated row is dead. Long live the Updated badge.
- 04
- Your like-percentage is about to go public.

SHIPS AUG 5 · DISCOVER ELIGIBILITY
❤️🔥 1. Starting August 5, Epic will tell you when your island isn't eligible for Discover.
Right now an island can be invisible and you'd never know why. That ends tomorrow — Creator Portal will notify you if your published island isn't eligible for placement, and the How Discover Works docs are being updated with the common reasons.
Silent failure just became a diagnosis. That's the most useful thing in the whole post.
PERSONALIZATION · IN-ROW RANKING
❤️🔥 2. Discover is now personalized INSIDE the rows, not just across them.
Epic already personalized which genre rows you see. Now they're ranking content within each row to each player's taste and play history.
Their example: one tycoon jumps to the front of the row for one player, while a different tycoon leads for someone else.
Translation: "position 4 in Strategy" isn't really a thing anymore. Your rank is a distribution across millions of individual feeds.
To compensate, Epic is exposing island rankings through their API so you can see how often and where you show up across all of Discover.
LATER THIS QUARTER · UPDATED BADGE
❤️🔥 3. The Updated row is being removed. An "Updated" badge replaces it.
Later this quarter, islands with meaningful recent updates get a highlight on their tile and become eligible to appear in ANY Discover row.
Epic leaned hard on that word "meaningful". Their examples are new themes, areas, modes and mechanics.
So republishing to farm the Updated row stops working. Actually shipping content pays out across the entire surface instead of one row. Higher ceiling, higher bar to clear.
STILL TO COME · SOCIAL PROOF
❤️🔥 4. Still to come: richer social proof on tiles, a like-percentage shown alongside CCU, and a redesign that puts Discover upfront in the player experience.
That like-percentage is the sleeper. Player sentiment becomes a public number people see before they click.
THE THROUGHLINE
The throughline: Epic is turning Discover from a leaderboard into a recommender system.
In their words, build something great, keep it updated, keep players engaged once they're in. Discover connects it with the audience who'll love it.
Harold at Epic asked for feedback directly in the thread, so it's worth reading in full and replying.
OVER TO YOU
Genuine question for the builders here: is removing the Updated row a net win or a net loss for smaller creators?
